Sex Education For Adults #1

Learning is for life, but it shouldn't just be limited to work and school. Sex education comes in all forms, and adults who want to enhance their sex life should stay on top of the latest trends and concepts. This article will offer advice and tips on how to keep sexually educated, how to separate the good information from the bad, and a few other ideas that will all help to enhance your sex education and improve your sex life. Today we are going to offer an overview of the topic, just so you get a feel for what sort of resources are available to people over the age of 18.

Growing Up
Back when you were growing up, your primary source of sex education probably came from one of five sources. (1) Family – either from a sister or brother, but more often during an awkward conversation with a parent. (2) School – through a variety of courses on human health and/or sexual education; reliable but awkward due to the nature of the topic, the age of the participants, and the school setting. (3) Friends – a cornucopia of lies, half-truths, graphic retellings, and other bits of collective wisdom passed along by friends who were as ignorant as you were. (4) Trial & Error – if you were lucky and got lucky, then you had the opportunity to fumble your way over each other’s bodies. Each time you got a little bit better, and if your partner had some experience, then you probably learned from her suggestions. (5) Popular culture – movies, books, magazines, and more. All of these influences trickle down and had an effect on the adult you became, and shaped your sexuality.

Older & Wiser
One of the primary differences between now and then is that you now have the benefit of wisdom and experience. Now that you fully understand how great sex is, you have a vested interested in becoming better at it. For example, most teenage boys couldn’t find a clitoris if their lives depending on it, but they could probably show you the sweet spot on a bat or golf club. As an adult in a relationship (or maybe someone who just wants to maintain their reputation and/or sexual prowess), you understand that pleasing your partner is crucial to a healthy sex life. Learning what works and what doesn’t is important, as the trial and error method you used at age 15 might not be as charming coming from an adult male.

Sex Ed Sources
What hasn’t changed since you were a kid is finding a reliable information source for sexual information. In addition to reliability, adults still suffer from embarrassment when it comes to questions of a sexual nature. Here is a list of the some of the best ways for adults to learn more about sex education.

Discussions with your partner. Have you ever tried to have a serious discussion about sex with your partner? It can be very awkward, as many interpret these conversations as a critique into their lovemaking skills. However, finding out what your partner likes and dislikes is the first step to educating oneself on sexual practices. Remember – you are not a great lover just because you are stimulating someone sexually. Find out what else you can do, how to do it better, and always try to push through your comfort zone to avoid falling into familiar habits.

The Internet. If you’re searching beyond Men’s Forté for sexual information, the keyword ‘sex’ will get you an impressive number of hits. But sifting through all of the sources on the web to find ones with an educational value can be daunting. One tip is to try and find health related sites, as these are often run by organizations and/or governments that like to offer people tips on sexual healthcare, safe sex practices, and usually detailed information on the function and anatomy of the sex organs. These sites are good starting points that will help you better understand nearly everything to with sex and sexuality.

Self Help Books & Videos. Everything from the Kama Sutra, to The Joy of Sex, to Seductive Sex Positions – offer ‘how to’ guides on various positions and techniques. These materials are not pornography, and they offer step-by-step instructions (with video, pictures, or diagrams) that offer the viewer/reader proven techniques that will enhance their sex life.

Instruction. A more recent phenomenon in the world of sex education is courses on sexual technique. These come in the form of group classes, or can be as intimate as a one-on-one (literally!) instructor – student session. Sexual instruction for adults is becoming more and more common, with classes offered to everyone from young singles to married seniors. Surrogates are people trained in different aspects of sexuality, and help clients in a way similar to the patient-therapist relationship developed in psychiatry. The methods range from listening to actual demonstration, as individuals or as couples.

Sexual Therapy. Although this field covers a wide range of issues, sexual therapists work with people who have, for one reason or another, become sexually dysfunctional. Everything from confidence building to erectile dysfunction can be addressed, and many therapists will offer couple counseling for those looking to improve or enhance their love lives. In the end, the primary goal of a therapist is to ensure a return to a normal, healthy sex life.

Summary
The goal of this article was to give you an overview of some of the more common resources available to adults in the area of sex education. In future articles we will review each source more closely, and provide detailed examples of the effectiveness of each program, how to get started, potential sources, and the pros and cons of each source. Remember: learning is a lifetime passion, and it shouldn’t just be limited to things you need to know in the workplace. A healthy relationship needs renewal, and what better place to start than the bedroom? The best thing about sex education for grown ups is that you get to practice until you get it right! Now that’s the kind of homework every student enjoys! Next Month – Learning from each other – how to discuss sex in a productive way, so that you both benefit from each other’s wants, needs, and experience.
