Sex Education for Adults: Learning at home

Learning is for life, but it shouldn't just be limited to work and school. Sex education comes in all forms, and adults who want to enhance their sex life should stay on top of the latest trends and concepts. This article will offer advice and tips on how to keep sexually educated, how to separate the good information from the bad, and a few other ideas that will all help to enhance your sex education and improve your sex life. Today we are going to focus on learning at home – an examination of the pros and cons of the sex education resources that people bring into their homes.

Getting started
By now, we are assuming you have had the chance to at least broach the idea of opening up your relationship so that you and your partner can freely discuss issues of sexuality. But even if you are not at this stage, there is no reason to fear introducing concepts of sexuality by bringing some “sex ed” right into your home. Here are some common ways people do it, and some pros and cons for each one.

Co-Ed Sex Toy Party
This is probably the most benign form of in-home sex education, and the best part about it is the parties usually come with a host/organizer/explainer. What normally happens is you would send out invitations to your like-minded friends, and then have everyone over for drinks and appetizers. This is followed by a "hold & tell", which is when the hostess passes around the toys and explains their many uses. Your guests can then privately order products, and everyone usually has a lot of laughs.

Pros - These parties offer a safe environment to initiate your partner into the wonderful world of sex toys. It might be easier for her to talk about sex toys in your own home surrounded by close friends, rather than going to a store.

Cons - Make sure you invite like-minded friends, as some people still think sex is a dirty word that should never be discussed in public. You should also avoid inviting family members, and never tell people the toys you have bought – everybody likes to gossip and you wouldn’t want your partner to find out that everyone knows the toys you purchased.

Sex Therapist
For a nominal fee, you can actually have sex therapists come into your home to discuss sex with you. This can be done in group sessions, where they teach you sex positions (while clothed); by gender (ex. Blowjob classes); or by couple. The experience can be very interested, as these educators are often quite animated and interesting. The group parties can be very funny, particularly if you get the right kind of crowd involved.

Pros - Expert advice. People who spend their lives learning the fine arts of love making deserve to get paid when they pass along that knowledge. You will definitely learn some new tricks; just try not to snicker when they ask you to try out positions.

Cons - Some people find any public displays of affection embarrassing, so make sure your friends understand that this is a serious endeavor, not a cheap attempt to trigger an orgy.

Sex Coach
For the more adventurous, there are now people out there who will come to your house and physically teach you how to be a better lover. Kind of like a call girl with a mission. Most of these people are professionals in every sense of the word, and their goal is to train individuals or couples new techniques and methods, so that their sex life will go to the next level. And before you panic…they are legal in most states.

Pros - You cover off your threesome fantasy with a legitimate sex educator. Plus, you get the kind of one-on-one sex coaching that most people never get.

Cons - You need to make sure that you get what you pay for, and you have not stumbled across someone looking to make a few bucks by turning a high-end trick. Talk to a sex therapist and ask them to give you a few names, just so you know you are getting someone who actually knows what they are doing. Don’t be afraid to ask to see credentials!

Digital Information
Obviously there are many videos out there that will help you learn more about sex, and some are superior to others. Once again, you need to make sure you understand the dividing line between porn and learning. Obviously porn has its purposes, and many couples use porn to spice up their sex life. But there also many videos out there that offer people step-by-step narrated video instruction, coupled with websites where people just like you get together to talk about their experiences with the video. And speaking of the web, there are many sites that offer serious information about how couples can improve their sex lives. There are too many to mention here, but you might want to start by checking with your family physician, sex therapist, and friends.

Pros - Once again, you have the advantage of being in your home, so you have lots of privacy. Videos are often reasonably priced, so you can always buy more if you find this method works for you. The other nice thing about videos is that they give you nice images to watch and follow along with, as opposed to reading a book with bad drawings.

Cons - There are just as many videos out there as there are websites. And sadly, quantity does not increase equality. Take the time to do a little research, and don’t believe everything the guy in the video store tells you.

The goal of this article was to give you another starting point for a healthy sexual relationship that involves talking and listening, not just doing. Knowledge can be a powerful tool, so learning about your partner’s wants and needs will benefit you in many ways. And keep in mind that talking about sex in a mature way will have a tremendous benefit for you – more and better sex! So help to establish the lines of communication, and start educating each other on how to make each other sexually satisfied in entirely new ways.
