We probably all want a job that would satisfy our basic needs on the one hand and the soul aspirations on the other. I am referring to a job that would make you get up in the morning with the desire to do better your job today than you had yesterday.

And this would not be done for a bonus or any other exterior appreciations, but simply for your inner satisfaction, for the pleasure to explore and to improve the field you work in and to make you feel more proud of the quality of what you are offering through your job.

If only things were like this… In fact, for most of us work is most of the times a forced labor, an obligation we do for the monthly payment and nothing more. If we are lucky we like the people we work with and we feel good with them. But when it comes to work…

From a certain perspective, it feels like we were still at school. We wait for the weekend to come with the same impatience like that we had during our school days, we hate Mondays, and we look at our watches all the time with the hope that time will pass more quickly. It is natural, once we feel forced to respect our work program and to complete our tasks. It is an obligation, not a choice. Choice is when we accept a job because we are attracted by the activity, when it suits us and when it fulfills us not just on the financial level.

This situation may seem ideal and most of the times it is thought to have something to do with luck. Something like:”You are lucky that you like what you are doing.” But still, luck has nothing to do with this. It is just a choice a person makes. Here are some things worth considering if you are looking for the appropriate job for your needs and your wishes.

Don’t base on general opinions.
Everyone state their opinion on what jobs are better paid, of what companies are or aren’t ok, etc. but no one can know what is best for you and the criteria other use in a job’s description may not represent you at all.

Know as good as you can your needs and your aspirations.
This is a self analyze work, which you can do alone or assisted by a psychological counselor specialized in professional orientation. Truly, without a clear definition of your needs, you cannot know what job would best fulfill you.

Increase your self confidence.
Here you have many options. If you are self made, you can study and apply the methods described in the personal development books; you can ask the advice of a counselor that can help you discover your weak spots and your inhibitions and transform them in strong points. No matter the method you choose, you have to consolidate the faith in you to deal the challenges you will face.

Clarify your priorities.
It is important to always know what you are looking for in a job: to like the activity you perform or to earn a lot of money. This can go hand in hand; we can say that a man who performs his job with passion gets to earn larger amounts of money. But, if you put the financial gain first, you will become one of the numerous ones that perform their jobs just out of duty. And, on the long run, this is the sure recipe to unhappiness and the potential’s failure.

Put differently, everyone has certain qualities which make him or her appropriate for some professions; because in these professions he/she can make his/her potential have a value, which will bring fulfillment in more than a way. But if the job doesn’t allow for this potential to manifest, what is not used is wasted.

Explore
Do not limit yourself just to some types of known jobs. Get informed, explore the work market and you will have a larger range of jobs to choose from. The more options handy, the closest you will get to identify the appropriate job for you.

Get into action.
Do not get discouraged by what the others tell you that you can or cannot do. Apply to the jobs you are most attracted to, go to interviews to enrich your experience and your knowledge, choose a consultant from a human resources firm that will advice you what are the best ways for you to make yourself worth the best way you can.

There are a lot of things you can do to get the job you have wanted, starting with a better self knowledge to participating to final employment interviews.

After you find it, the most interesting part of your adventure is expecting, an adventure that will give a higher sense to your daily life. An adventure that you choose freely and which seems more like a game and less like a forced labor.
